Sunette Viljoen became South Africa’s ninth medalist at the Rio Olympics when she won silver in the women’s javelin on Thursday night (Friday morning South African time). Viljoen’s best throw of the night  of 64.92m was not far off gold medal winner, Croatia’s Sara Kolak, throw of 66.18m.

In what was a tense final, which constantly saw the positions jumble, and which saw Viljoen take the lead early on, Viljoen still managed a very good result.
